William Smith Collection

Overview

This collection contains a handwritten copy of correspondance from William Smith, an Anglican priest and the first Provost of Philadelphia College (later the University of Pennsylvania), to an unnamed acquaintance in England regarding the political history of colonial Pennsylvania and the threat of a French invasion of the colony. Includes harsh criticism of the Germans residing in Pennsylvania and of the political inaction of the Quaker political elite.

American Friends Service Committee lantern slides of World War I relief work

Overview English and American Quakers were involved in relief efforts in Europe during and after WWI. These efforts were begun by English Quakers of London Yearly Meeting, and later joined by the American Friends Service Committee. They expanded the scope of their aid from France to also include Russia, Serbia, Poland, Austria, and Germany. Biddle family Papers

Overview This collection contains the papers of Philadelphia Quaker Owen Biddle (1737-1799), his son, Clement Biddle (1778-1856), and numerous descendants. Owen Biddle, a scientist and merchant, was a member of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting and helped in the establishment of Westtown School (1799). Jacqueline Pascal Morris Evans papers

Overview

Jacqueline Pascal Morris (later Evans) (1886-1947) graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1908. Following her graduation, she and two cousins, Agnes and Alida, travelled through Europe for three months. Their route took them from Paris into Switzerland, and then down the Italian peninsular. They returned the same way, travelling along the French Riviera before their return from London. This collection contains 26 letters, written to Jacqueline’s father over the course of her travels.
