Bowles family correspondence

Abstract The Bowles family was deeply involved with Quaker missionary and relief work during the 20th century. In 1900, the Bowles moved to Japan under the auspices of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and managed the Friends School and established the Tokyo Friends Center. Overview

Papers from the Fourth World Conference of Friends (Quakers) which was held at Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1967. Edwin Bronner was chair of the Executive Committee of the American Section, but there was worldwide representation by Friends and guests. A well known speaker at the conference was U.N. Secretary General U Thant.

Overview Stephen G. Cary graduated from Germantown Friends School in 1933 and from Haverford College in 1937. He earned a master's degree in international administration from Columbia University in 1943. Between 1946 and 1969, Cary worked for the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), and was the chairman of the AFSC from 1979 to 1991. This collection contains the papers of Blanche Weber Shaffer, a Swiss Quaker who was involved with the Friends World Committee for Consultation and devoted her life to fostering relationships between Quakers throughout the globe. The materials in this collection include personal, professional, and travel materials, as well as diaries and correspondence, spanning the years 1940 to 1979, with some earlier letters from John Marshall Crosman in 1918.
