This collection primarily includes letters received by Carolyn V. Cutler and Serena A. Minard. The letters relate local and family news. One letter, addressed from Paris, describes a meeting of the Prison Reform Association. Also included are letters from Quaker ministers Jonathon D. Noxon and Isaac Wilson. These letters relate personal news and advice about farming.

Elkinton Family Doukhobor Papers

Overview The Doukhobors are a pacifist sect. They originated in Russia but were forced to emigrate to Canada in 1898 due to their refusal to bear arms for the Tsar. In the late 1930s their leader, Peter P. Overview Joshua Evans, a Quaker minister and abolitionist, was born in 1731 in West Jersey. About the year 1754, he experienced a religious conversion and thereafter devoted his life to sharing his rigorous interpretation of the gospel through an ascetic and pious life style and simple ministry. Ross Flanagan Papers

Overview

Ross Flanagan (1934- ), is Quaker pacifist and activist, has been involved in many Quaker-sponsored projects, peace, and civil rights activities. In the 1950s he served on the staff of the American Friends Service Committee. He was an early protestor against the Vietnam war and worked with A Quaker Action Group in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In the 1970s Flanagan was involved in neighborhood revitalization projects in West Philadelphia.

John J. Merritt Family Papers

Overview

John J. Merritt (1804-1871) was a New York City Hicksite Quaker businessman. He was the son of John and Phebe J. Brown and in 1827, married Hannah Brown of Amawalk Monthly Meeting. This collection primarily contains John J. Merritt's correspondence with Hannah Brown during their courtship and after their marriage. The letters describe life in New York City and travel in New York State, Canada, and Michigan.
