Contains the records of the Fair Housing Council of Suburban Philadelphia and its affiliated organization, Friends Suburban Housing, Inc. Friends Suburban Housing, Inc., was a non-discriminatory real estate brokerage firm in the Philadelphia suburbs, founded in 1956. The Fair Housing Council of Suburban Philadelphia also began in 1956 as the Southeastern Delaware County Area Committee of Friends Suburban Housing Committee. Records include minutes, case files, financial and legal papers.

Ross Flanagan Papers

Overview

Ross Flanagan (1934- ), is Quaker pacifist and activist, has been involved in many Quaker-sponsored projects, peace, and civil rights activities. In the 1950s he served on the staff of the American Friends Service Committee. He was an early protestor against the Vietnam war and worked with A Quaker Action Group in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In the 1970s Flanagan was involved in neighborhood revitalization projects in West Philadelphia.

Mississippi Project Financial Records

Overview In response to the 1964 bombing of 44 black churches in Mississippi, Philadelphia and New York Yearly Meetings coordinated a joint effort to rebuild the destroyed churches and to attempt to foster racial reconciliation in the area. The project sent Lawrence and Viola Scott to Jackson, Mississippi as Quaker representatives. Overview The National Conference of Friends on Race Relations was initiated in 1956 in order to stimulate individual Friends and Quaker meetings to work directly in the field of race relations. Conferences were held at irregular intervals and various locations between 1956 and 1970. It was succeeded in 1970 by Friends for Human Justice which in turn was laid down circa 1976. Lawrence Scott Papers

Lawrence Scott was a construction engineer, Baptist clergyman, and Quaker activist. He worked as an activist against the testing of nuclear weapons and biological weapons research. He was the supervisor for the Friends Mississippi Project, project director of the Appeal and Vigil at Fort Detrick in Maryland, executive secretary of the Peace Action Center and a founder of A Quaker Action Group.
