Abstract

The collection consists primarily of printed material; includes flyers, notes from meetings, newspaper clippings, photographs, banners, legal briefs, publicity materials, and reference files. Also includes a memoir by Robert W. Hillegass about the making of the play "Handy Dandy" by William Gibson which draws heavily on Ailanthus courtroom experience and spirituality.

Overview William B. Webb was a druggist and member of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting of Friends (Hicksite). He married Rebecca Turner in 1853. Their youngest daughter, Rebecca St. Claire Webb, married Jessie Herman Holmes in 1892. Holmes was a prominent Quaker, taught philosophy and religion at Swarthmore College, and was active in AFSC relief in Europe after World War I. Abstract

Robert E. Levering is a pacifist and Quaker. He has been the co-author of Fortune magazine's annual list of the "100 Best Companies to Work For," and a speaker on workplace trends and management strategies aimed at improving workplace productivity. Levering is a graduate of Swarthmore College and the Martin Luther King Jr. School of Social Change.

The collection, primarily of correspondence of Quaker Beulah Hurley (1886-) relating principally to her relief work after World War I in Europe and Russia under the auspices of several Friends' groups and the photographs of Quaker P. Alston Waring (1895-1978) taken in Europe, East Asia, California, Central America and mainly in India between 1915 and 1954.
