Rufus Matthew Jones was born on January 25, 1863 in South China, Maine. His parents were Edwin and Mary Gifford Hoxie Jones. Their family had been Quakers, and he was brought up in a spartan and religious household. By his own estimate, Rufus M. Overview
Andrew H. Woods (1872 – 1956) became vice president of Canton College in Canton, China in 1899. He maintained his association with Canton College throughout the Boxer Rebellion and the dethronement of the Manchu Dynasty. Woods moved back and forth between China and the United States with his wife, Fanny Sinclair, who graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1901. In 1929, the couple and their children settled in Iowa.
