William C. Allen diaries

Overview

Diaries of William C. Allen's religious visits around the world from 1904 to 1937. Entries generally describe the customs, manners, language, transportation, food, and religious beliefs of each location Allen visited, as well as Quaker meetings he lead and religious and political leaders he met with in each place he visited. One volume of the collection does not record a religious visit, but is a record of Allen's thoughts on World War I, which he kept during 1917.

Overview

William C. Allen was born in 1857 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Society of Friends. Allen was deeply opposed to war and wrote often about the problems of propaganda, censorship, conscription, imperialism, and the munitions industry. He traveled widely and wrote many articles about his experiences abroad.

Abstract The Alliance for Conscientious Objectors (AFCO), based in Seattle (Washington), was founded in 1970 by John Long and Paul Anderson, who served as its national coordinator. It changed its name in 1972 to represent a wider scope of purpose. During this time, conscientious objectors who performed two years of alternate service, the same period as those drafted into the military served, were not entitled to Veterans Administration benefits under the GI Bill of Rights. Allinson family scrapbooks

Overview

The Allinson family scrapbook is largely comprised of clippings on poetry, temperance, prison reform, reform for juvenile delinquents, and anti-slavery. Many of the anti-slavery clippings discuss the possibility of using Jamaica as a "home for colored emigrants." The end of the volume includes 12 pages of signatures. The volume also includes an obituary for Samuel Allinson.
